This elegantly designed Globe in a minimalist color palette of cream and sepia is artistically hand crafted to produce an attractive, luxurious and contoured piece which will compliment any living space. Captain's Pedestal Writing Desk for Office or Home Study
Captains made good use of notoriously cramped quarters in the ship's stern section (deckhands were housed before the mast). The captain's desk was tailor made to offer maximum comfort and space in a minimal floor area. Drawers to house the crew's papers, sealed sailing instructions, logbooks, charts, instruments and a pair of flintlock pistols. Brass corners to protect from damage when being moved around. French Style Cargo Lantern Pendant Light Fitting
Somehow French tool and instrument makers know how to add a little molding here, a nick or twist there. Here it results in a product of unsurpassed elegance and appeal. Our French Cargo lantern was used during expeditions of the French Colonial Army while quartered in Tahiti, Saigon, Casablanca, Martinique. The reason that only a few original brass utilitarian colonial objects can be found these days is that most were melted down during WWII. Porthole Nautical Style Storage Cabinet
Famous US yachtsmen (the Morgans, Vanderbilts, Roosevelts…) visiting the Royal Yacht squadron clubhouse at Cowes were surprised at the lack of locker rooms, showers and docks. Even a bar was absent. In contrast the cabins and staterooms of the visiting American yachts were resplendent with grandeur. Fine interior upholstery and cabinetwork were de rigueur. Cowes was an enchanted world, shining by day with brass, polished precious woods and the flash of oars. Visitors and club members danced by night on polished teak decks, sleeping between silk in beautifully appointed cabins, enjoying fireworks and fine cuisine. Two beautiful cabin cabinets, one with large porthole windows, and one with fold-out drawer-fronts, are ideal for bankers, navigators, presidents and authors… as well as armchair sailors. 46.5 x 92.5 x 153.5cm. Vintage Style Wooden Navigator's Office Desk
Travellers’ and seafarers of yore had to be resourceful in order to survive. Desks on board ships had to be cleared and stowed at a moment’s notice. Things had to be multi-functional. In the case of this desk, the two supports could act as steps into the navigator’s bunk, or to mount a camel, whichever came first. The desktop, complete with drawers and brass bound, could act to stop musket bullets when under fire. Ming Altar Console Table in Cherry
Chinese furniture is usually somewhat over-decorated for Western tastes. But simple lines and clever construction were used throughout Chinese history for travel furniture. Found in one of the 800 pavilions and palaces of the Forbidden City, the original of this altar/travelling table of unusual design was reputedly used by the Dowager Empress Tzu His when travelling incognito. The empress alternated piety with illicit affairs during her voyages. Tzu His may have used the side table as an alternative setting for excess dishes during her elaborate dinners, some of which ran to 100 courses or more. One of the wagons of the famous Simplon-Orient Express, departing daily from the Gare de Lyon for Istanbul in the 1920s, was fitted out as a small, intimate cinema. The rows of two chairs on each side of the wagon were separated by a red carpet. When in motion the movie screen shuddered and swayed with the rhythmic movement but Douglas Fairbanks Sr. remained heroic, if silent. The folding seats were wood, finished in a rich deep red. Personally, I have always wanted a set or two for my hallway; they don't take up much space.
